  • Motorcycling the Western US - Update 8/8

Just finished Day 3 of a planned 3-6 week ride... Have covered 1700 miles since leaving home on June 28th... First 600 miles was getting to Ouray Colorado to meet up with friends from across the country (including Midave and his family) for a week of Jeeping the trails in the Ouray-Silverton-Telluride triangle.

Sunday morning, a fellow M-cycling buddy (from Detroit) and I left Ouray, with initial plans to go north to Vernal Ut to visit the Dinosaur NM... Rains in that direction changed our plans and we instead headed SW to Lake Powell, then North to Hanksville UT, visiting the Anazazi Indian Ruins and sites along the way...

    Natural Bridges NM

Next day faced once again with the threat of rain, we headed for Bryce Canyon, then on to Zion NP before camping for the night.

    Bryce Canyon...

    Zion NP

Today we left the Zion area, and rode the Wasasch Mt Range to Park City UT to visit a friend who has a condo here...

Steve is riding a very well put together Honda Goldwing. He has been tuning and tricking it for about 6 months now......

BTW Ouray was a hoot. As soon as I get my new computer set up I will try and post some pics.....

Rode to the Bonneville Salt Flats today to watch some of the racers work on the track in preparation for Speed Week in August...

Then visited the Air base where most of the bomber crews were trained during WW2... Including the crews which flew the Enola Gay and the BlocBuster, which are the two B-29's which carried the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki... VERY interesting...

Paul Tibbetts - Commander on the Enola Gay ...

Replica of the bomb dropped by the Enola Gay...

Some of the pictures of the nose art of the planes which trained here... The CAF Museum in Midland Texas is home to many of the original nose arts, which were removed during the planes demolitions post war. They are being meticulously preserved and restored and the museum there has several on display... If you are EVER in the Permian basin area of Texas, I HIGHLY recommend you drop by the CAF museum and spend at least a 1/2 day there... The museum in Wendover is HUGE, as the base at one time housed 22000 troops in bomber training... Also worth the visit, even though the restoration and preservation efforts there are significantly behind many museums...

Am having a mild fuel related issue which crops up on long hot runs, but hope to get a new pump installed tomorrow or the next day to correct that...[8D][]

UPDATE: Have located parts to use in the vent of a failure on the road... The OEM pumps are on back order, so I found a substitute that can be utilized if it fails completely...[][8D][]

Nice job on the pics Steve, I have one to add, here is Steve on July 4th rolling into Ouray for the parade. The towns out west really celebrate the 4th all the way.

My riding partner had enough yesterday while visiting the battle site of Custers Last Stand (the battle of little bighorn), and he headed for the barn in Michigan, so I'm on my own for the next few weeks...

Am currently ~ 6 hours south of the Canadian border and am in Montana, heading to Glacier Nat'l Park this evening/tomorrow...

Will try to post some pictures in the next few days...

Awesome pics. You better find a fly rod if you are up in the Missoula area and hit the streams.

Spent a few days in Canada, but got weathered out... Unfortunately, my intended visit to Banff and Lake Louise will have to wait, as there was a front on it's way through with a 2nd one close behind...

FWIW: Rain/sleet in the Rockies (Canadian or otherwise) coupled with high 30's -to- low 40's was not my idea of a great time on a m/cycle, so I headed south, and after several hours of riding in the rain, ended up in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho last evening, for a WELCOME break in a motel with a HOT shower and a warm and dry bed... [][]

Am meeting a former co-worker here for lunch today, then off to the Columbia river gorge separating Washington & Oregon, for what I am told are some beautiful sights...

Having a tough time finding any WiFi that is strong enough to support loading pics, but will do so as soon as I find one that works work a darn...

Next up is a visit to Crater Lake, Lake Shasta, then back to the Coast to ride the PCH for a bit... Probably break off from that a few times to visit the wine valleys and of course Yosemite, etc...

Will drop in now & then to let you know how it's going...

PS: Clocked almost exactly 5000 miles since leaving home, yesterday when I crossed the border back into the US...[][}][]
