  • 2000 Optimax 225 problem

    I bought a project boat last week and have been working on the 225 optimax trying to get it running right. It had been not used for 5 years so I had quite a bit of work to do. This is what I have done so far.

    1 cleaned out the vst tank

    2 cleaned all 12 injectors

    3 replaced the spark plugs

    4 replaced fuel lines and filters from tank back.

    5 verified oil pump and tanks are working correctly.

    Here is my dilemma ..the engine starts easy and idles perfectly. goes in and out of gear nice. will accelerate until I hit somewhere around 3000 rpms then the tach falls back down and the engine looses power and I have to return the throttle back to smooth out the engine. No alarms are sounding, and the alarm does work....

    Any ideas??

    low pressure fuel pump not supplying enough to the high pressure pump - maybe?

      I just did another check of all my pumps and your absolutely correct!! It is not putting out any pressure at all. not even turning....

        I wanted to follow up on this topic. The low pressure fuel pump solved my runnability issues when it was coming up to plane. This pump is supposed to provide ample low pressure fuel to feed the high pressure pump located inside the VST. I have not run this project much as I have been doing cosmetics. I discovered yesterday it would not idle well and seemed rich. I put the fuel pressure gauge on today and discovered over 115 PSI of fuel pressure on the fuel rails instead of 90psi required My "low pressure" fuel pump I bought from Ebay (china) was a 60psi model rather than a 10 psi model..After searching the web I discovered a couple other mechanics complaining about the exact same issue. There are thousands of these pumps being replaced each year, many of which I expect are faulty. I unpluged the faulty low pressure pump and my fuel pressure went back to the required 90 psi and idled smooth again. More to follow when the vender gets back to me tomorrow..
