  • Merc 250 vs 225 optimax

I had a 96 Merc 250 EFI on a 1996 243 WA. that performed well until it went. I have a opportunity to get a 2001 225 Merc. optimax and was was curious if anyone could tell me if their is going to be a significant difference in performance.

Stay with the EFI. 2001 Optimax were VERY bad engines.

I have a 1998 and 1999 optimax 225 on my boat and love them. I cannot say anything to the later years having issues.

I know the 200 and 225 were the same blocks. I am not sure about the 225 and the 250 but I would assume you could change out props and get about the same performance.

Thanks. I think I will give it a try. I have heard to look for 2002 or newer but this motor has been rebuilt last year and has very few hours on rebuild
