  • First Boat - '83 Mako 238

little project I picked up to get me through the winter

    Here are a few pics:

Just going through the budget / planning stages now.

Any advice on what size outboard? Previous owner, an older gent in his 70's said the motor he parted out before selling it said it had a 220 and was over powered. Stopped by a small engine repair shop yesterday and the guy said I need a 6 cyl. When I stared at him blankly in return he said at least a 160.

That boat cruises and fishes real nice with a Suz. 250 on the back. Of course you will need to fix the current transom. Brandon has that boat and motor and I have seen him way offshore. I am sure he will chime in.

I have the model in the CC version and also have the 250 on the back. I am removing the aft boxes currently as it frees up a lot of cockpit space.

Congrats on the boat. It's a real machine that can take an ace whooping if you ask her two. I frequently have people surprised that she can do what she does. The 238 is max HP of 250. You'll optimize fuel efficiency by maxing out. I had a 200 two stroke before and it was fine but I wouldn't go any lower than 200. She is a heavy girl with the cabin. I get 5mph on the troll, 2.25 to 3.1 mph on cruise and WOT I am hitting 42MPH.
