  • 1997 232 with bracket repower

Been waiting on a new engine for my Mako 232 since Feb this year. Shop has a new Yamaha 300hp that has some cosmetic damage but is available now. The hull is officially rated for 250hp but the 250 and 300 are the same weight. Concern is amount of torque a more powerful engine would apply to the (25 year old) bracket on the stern of the boat. Wondering if anyone has seen or heard of some engineering to strengthen the platform. As always any help is greatly appreciated. Attached image not my boat but thats what the bracket/swim platform looks like. Cheers!

I have a 97 232 with the factory bracket. Bought it in 2013 with a 2008 Suzuki 250 4 stroke. The 300 weighs the same as the 250 but those four strokes are heavier than the 250 2 stroke it was originally rated for. With the baitwell full and a couple of people in the transom I can get some water on the deck. It's only a problem when the baitwell drain is open as the deck drains have check valves.

When the fuel tank is full, and I have a load of ice and a full crew, the 250 can lug when getting on a plane. I don't think a 300 is overkill, especially when it weighs the same as the 250.

The bracket is plenty strong. The real issue would be the condition of the almost 25 year old transom. They were all made with marine plywood and it's surely wet. Mine doesn't show any cracks, yet.

Thanks C Gator - The boat lived in CT and was only in the water for 4 months a year for most of its life. Ill check the condition of the transom but I think its in good shape. We're in California now and the boat lives in the water so will continue to monitor. Good call on bait well being empty!

I am running a 1992 221b with a modified OEM bracket, but it holds the weight and power of the f300 just fine.

That is a fine looking watercraft right there.
