  • 1974 Mako 23 Diesel Restoration

New to the site as a member but been looking at the the beautiful classics on here for the last couple of years. My dad picked up a 1974 23 cc io with the cuddy bow about six years ago. What a beast of a boat. We converted her from an omc drive to a merc alpha about 3 years ago filled in the hole and fixed the transom. I didn't post the project. Wasn't on the site till the other day. This springs project We bought a t top. Which turned into stripping the durabak coating off the deck that we put on two years ago( big mistake). Fixing all the stress cracks in the deck, holes and cracks in the console, motor box and gunwales. Aluminum plates in the deck where the ttop legs mount and adjustments to the console because the top was off a 79 mako231. New glass deck over the top. Paint. Radar( which came with the top) am/fm radio, speakers and VHF. Picks to follow soon. I'm at jury duty now writing this. Took a bunch of picks yesterday have to upload tonight and post. Look forward to all the comments.

Welcome to the site and sounds like you are no newbie when it comes to working on your own boat. Have fun with jury duty![]

FILLED ALL THE HOLES IN THE CONSOLE, GUNWALES AND THE MOTOR BOX

WAS GOING REPLACE ALL THE TEAK WITH STARBOARD BUT WOULD HAVE COST WAY TO MUCH. THESE CLASSIC BOATS SHOULD HAVE SOME TEAK IN THEM. AFTER SANDING MY DAD SPENT QUITE SOME TIME SANDING THE ORIGINAL AND COATED WITH 3 COATS SIKKENS NATUARL TEAK AND 2 COATS GLOSS IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL.

2 YEARS AGO WE COATED THE DECK AND TO OF THE CUDDY WITH DURABAK. WHAT A MISTAKE IT WAS DIRTY WITHIN A WEEK AND COULD NEVER GETIT BACK. IT ALSO GOT SUPER STICKY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. WHEN WE CALLED THE COMPANY TO COMPLAIN THEY OFFERED 10% OFF THE NEXT PURCHASE TO RECOAT. SO THE PAINT STRIPPING SCRAPING AND GRINDING BEGAN.

NOT THAT MANY PICS OF THIS BECAUSE I WAS COVERED IN RUBBER FOR 3 DAYS

THIS PAST SATURDAY WE HAD ALUMINUM PLATES PUT IN THE DECK WHERE THE TOP LEGS WILL MOUNT AND AFTER I GOT ALL THE RUBBER STUFF OFF THE DECK AND GROUND OUT ALL THE STRESS CRACKS WITH A DREMMEL. A LAYER OF 1808 AND ANOTHER 3/4OZ MAT FOR THE SURFACE WAS LAYED. THE DECK IS EXTREMELY SOLID NOW AND NO WORRYS OF THE TOP RIPPING OUT OF THE DECK.

GOUND THE HIGH SPOTS AND FILLED THE LOW SPOTS WITH DURAGLASS. THAT STUFF IS STRONG AND VERY DIFFICULT TO SAND ONCE HARD.

THE TOP CAME OFF A 1979 231 WITH THE TALLER CONSOLE AND WE DIDNT WANT TO CUT AND CHOP THE TOP SO WE HAD OUR FIBERGLASS GUY BUILD A BOX TO MOUNT TO THE CONSOLE TO CONNECT THE V SUPPORTS AND SINCE THE CONSOLE IS VERY SMALL IT WILL GIVE US A SPOT TO MOUNT THE RADAR SCREEN. WE ALSO REMOVED THE WINDSHEILD AND WILL HAVE A CUSTOM REMOVEABLE ENCLOSURE BUILT IN THE FUTURE.

If you don't mind can you give me a rundown on the aluminum under your deck?Reason is I have the same boat with twin i/o but want to eventually get a t top.I have a sheet of diamond tread aluminum that I think is 1/4 maybe thinner.I was wanting to cut 4 strips as long as the console base about 8 inches wide.Bond the strips with thickened epoxy so I have 2 peices 1/2 and scuff the glass sides if you will with a grinder wipe with acetone and glass skins with poly since I am gelcoating my deck.Does all this sound right to you?

I think that going the whole length of the console and 8" wide might be a bit overkill but would be very strong. our fiberglass guy told us to use 1/4" but we could only get our hands on 5/16" quickly(my dad is in the diesel truck repair business also, got the alunium from a trailer skin i think). im not that sure about epoxying the aluminum together (maybe some else can chime in) dont know how well that will hold. our deck was all spider cracked but the core was still good. the t-tops feet are 4" round, so we cut the plates 6" square, cut the deck out a litte bigger than the plates, scuffed the plates, laid some mat and resin, set the plates in but turned them so the corners were under the original top skin. a few layers of 1808 over the plates and a layer of 1808 and 3/4 mat over the whole deck. then drill and tap the plates and use machine screws to hold the top. i hope this helps any other questions i would be more than happy to help. what year is your boat, what motors are in it, do you have some pics? when are you planning to do your top

I don't have a top yet but mine is a 73 model and I got the twin Mercruiser 120s in it I did the transom from the inside and the center 3 stringers and bulkheads and now I have to put the whole floor in from the step up to the stern.Managed to get foam poured on port side the other day.I did my project backwards with gelcoat and awlgrip flag blue on the outside.Currently I have the top cap off the hull and that had been gelcoated also.My project is here in the project section

built out the console so the top can attach to the console. our fiberglass guy gave us a piece of a solid fiberglass stringer from the boats that he builds. we used this to make blocks to raise the height of the console.

                        BEFORE:

                        AFTER:

Laid some glass and resin to stick the blocks strong to the console, duraglas to fill.

                        SANDED DOWN SMOOTH:
