171 Special propeller

As I mentioned on earlier post, I just purchased an '89 171 Special with a '00 Johnson 115 hp oceanpro. At WOT it revs @ 5600 with a 13-3/4 and 15 pitch. I'm trying to keep the revs around 5100-5200. I'm thinking a 14" with 17 pitch. What do you think??

I think with a couple of buddies and/or a cooler full of bev. and ice your gonna wish you kept the propeller your using now. I personally think its about right. BTW that is one sweet looking boat. dave

Thank you guys. I hope I can make the tail end of the fishing season here in Rhode Island with this boat. I just have to get the trailer registered so I can put it in the water. I'm asking about the propeller 'cause this motor is not suppose to rev more than 5500??

Your better off a little on the high side on a 2 stroke than on the low side. Id keep what you have. dave

What does the manual say about the max rpm's? Ideally, you should have wot hit within 100-200 rpms of what the manual says is the max rpm's for the engine, and you should get to that point with the boat loaded with your average weight (cooler's, people, gas, beer, ice etc.). If you're too far under, your loading the engine too much.

I think you're propped just right. Better to be on the high side, you're just at the limit, than to lug her on the low side. Add people, beverage, and fish and those numbers may change. Besides, you have better low end grunt and probably better economy propped as is.
