  • New Engine for my Mako 15 - Mercury 60?

    Hi everyone,

I know this is an engine question, but I am looking more for discussion. My Mercury 1972 Thunderbolt 800 has given in, so I am looking for a replacement engine (looks like water in cylinder 3, not a good sign). I was thinking of the Mercury 60 EFI, mostly because of price and availability. Any comments on the engine? Thanks!

Ask 5 different guys & you'll get 4 different opinions on engines.

I love my Etec, though there are a lot of haters.

I think they are still offering a full 10 year warranty through the dealers, not a 5 + 5 or other 3rd party warranty.

Good luck with whatever you buy.

Well, I know you are right on the opinions of engines. Best value for me given deals from local marinas is the Honda 60. I'm sure I will not be disappointed. Looking forward to the trolling feature, I hear it has a very gradual increase, and the already installed tach may work with the new engine (Faria which has the ability to adjust for poles). At least I know the GPS speedometer will work!
