  • I need some help with prop selection

I have a 1979 Mako 21 with a 28" Armstrong bracket bolted to a 6" Bobs jack plate hanging a 2002 Yamaha OX66 200hp. I currently have some no name brand 3 blade SS prop that is a 15 1/4in 17 pitch and I currently max rpm of 6000 and a top speed of high 44 low 45mph. Now I know this isn't terrible performance for this boat but I am looking for something better maybe higher top speed and a little more control in the turns. I use to have a Mirage 19p 15 1/4in 3 blade and I wouldn't come close to my top rpm presently and I can't remember what my top speed was. Currently I can run shallower than any of my friends setups most of which have flats or bay style boats, the only one I can't run skinnier than is my buddies Lowtide flats boat.

Now I do run off shore with a decent amount of weight for diving occasionally and if a different prop wouldn't work for that but would meet my other needs I have no issues switching props for that day.

I have been interested in a 4 blade because from the way I understand it the 4 blade props will give me stern lift as well as better handling in the turns. I'm hopeful that it would give me a higher top speed. I've been looking at a few different ones the Quicksilver site suggested but not so sure about any of them until I try it on the boat or get some kind of idea from the wonderful folks here.

It sounds like you have competing wishes and need to prioritize them. A four blade will lift the rear and give more "bite" in turns and hole shot (good for getting up in shallow water and being heavily loaded). However, 4 blades will run slower than a 3 blade by up to several KTS. If all you wanted was speed, go to an 18 or 19 pitch 3 blade, but that will take longer to plane (bad in shallow water).

    I hope this helps.

      You're underpropped right now.

I would contact Ken at Propgods. He will be able to dial you in.

Add my vote to contact Ken.

FWIW: I'm running a Quicksilver Q4 in 17 pitch on my 23' with a 26" bracket and a 225 Mercury two stroke. I top out about 47 mph at 5400-5600 RPMs. It was Ken's suggestion, and he completely nailed it. The four blade has great bite, and lift.
