After purchasing a tach from another member and installing it the trim bars do not move whilemoving the engine up and down . Does it need to be reset or calibrated or is it a plug and play thing . Motor is 97 Yamaha 250 . The plugs and wires matched up with the old one.

Might need to check the trim sensor at the motor might be defective. Selco manual doesn't provide the resistance of sensor over the full range. Typical you could ground one side to verify wiring connections which would show full range to zero when open.

I've never had them last too long without binding up. Keyman is right, look to engine side.
Really though they are not needed. If you have a good feel for your boat, you should be able to tell where the trim is and not need to look.
