  • 135 HO or 150G2

    I am about to Repower my 17 Standard. Currently running a 1986 140 Johnson. What are some thoughts on going with the ETEC150 G2? Price for the ETEC135HO and 150 G2 are very close.

    do you keep the boat in the water? will it self bail with the bigger engine? How fast do you need to go? My boat runs nice with a 90...

      Boat is kept on a lift. Does not self bail with current engine.

      With the current engine the boat will run 40-42 but the engine is 32 years old. I think the 135 will be a perfect match but with the current promotions I can get the 150 G2 for not much more. Not sure about the weight or to much power though

        The boat is only rated for 135 horsepower...I had a mercury 135 on mine and it ran 46mph. My vote is you stick with the 135 ho...

          From a quick look at weights, it looks like your current engine weighs about 365lbs. The 135ho weights 418lbs and the G2 looks to weigh 496lbs. I personally wouldn't go with the G2 based on weight.

            Yes the weight is my biggest holdback.

              That's a lot of HP and weight for a 17. We had a 125 Merc on ours and it ran 42knots in backbay in smooth water. I would think 115 Etec would be more than enough fr you needs. Do you have trim tabs? Best investment you'll could make.

                Yes I have Bennett electric tabs. They make a world of difference

                  If I'm not mistaken the Gen1 135 HO is just a dumbied down Gen1 V6 150. Weighs the same as well. Why not put the 150 on there & call it a day?

                    Yes the G1 135 and 150 are the same specs just different computer settings. I was looking at the 135 & 150 G1 when one of the dealers asked if I would be interested in the G2 for just about the same price. I would like to have the integrated steering and digital controls of the G2 but I think I need to stick to the G1 for weight reasons.

                          I have a 200HO G2 with 160 trouble free hours....SO FAR.....in all categories performance exceeds expectations. ..Power, technology, speed, 3.6 miles per gallon at cruise. It is a new boat...That said, the motor weighs 539 lbs... it is heavy....... there have been no issues with it... so far...there is concern about being in sporty seas with a full 30 gallon livewell .... i would pick my days if I were fishing with the well....that maybe overthinking it...but that is how I approach it...and i am the Captain...responsible for everything the boat does or fails to do. Now on your quoted weights for the 135 and the 150..... that seems heavy....the old Yamaha 200 SWS checked in at 418 lbs... or thereabouts....so in my case batteries were moved forward....Singularly, My boat never had any water come over the transom into the splashwell...like some Makos do....we have all seen that....I guess in the Mako genetic lottery i was lucky.... and to date i have never had any water over transom with the much heavier G2. The increase in weight on the much smaller 17 would be a concern....the motor has significant setback on the transom....no telling how that would affect handling....It works on the much bigger heavier 221 hull... things to consider.
