Just pulled out the 150gallon tank in a 221. Its way more than we use, probably going to go down to 100. My question is, should I center the new tank or push it towards the front or back of the coffin?

Safest bet is probably center it.
I had an 86 and 36 -- the 36 being in front of the 86.
In the later years, I only ever ran with my 36 full.
When I replaced tanks, I went down to a single 60...I plan to keep this boat forever, and that's all I need. Given the boat was fine with the weight of the full 36 up front and the empty 86, I decided to mount the 60 all the way forward in the coffin.
No negative affect on static trim at all.

We fill the tank up at the beginning of the season but then will keep it around 80 gallons, sometimes less. Never saw the reason of keeping it 100% filled, seems like extra weight that doesn't need to be there. It basically rode felt the same riding at 150 and 80ish. Batteries are under console. Yamaha 225 on back.

I have commented in other posted in the past about restored 221B/232's that I have looked at that have done modifications; same hull as 221.
One used original dimensions, just shortened the tank shaving off ~50 gallons, and installed completely forward filling void with foam. this helped with center of gravity and allowed for weight of 250 4-stroke. Many saw that boat this past year in Destin "Shark's Bite".
The other more expensive and interesting option was not decreasing capacity by much and adding 2 tanks. I don't recall exact dimensions, but something like 80 gallon front and 50 gallon rear. The only tank needed/used was the front 80, but if capacity was needed for long runs the 50 was there with the intention of filling and using 1st. For playing and near shore trips less weight and more weight forward. This also allowed for 4 stroke wight upgrade.
With today's efficient motors I believe the capacity in these boats is not necessary. I have taken mine further than MANY say I should, based off size and single power, however I have NEVER been concerned about fuel.
If I were doing again I would make tank smaller and mount forward like the Shark's Bite.

Thanks all, looks like ill mount it further up which makes sense.
Another question, we want to do a fuel sender unit that actually works. Never really had good things with the swing arm style or its the gauge unit. I have a nmea 2000 system set up, can anyone recommend a good way to go? I use the garmin unit fuel flow that subtracts from how many gallons i set but sometimes it doesn't get shut off before the batteries get turned and doesn't save.
I want to do it right this time

quote:Whoever you get the tank from should be able to hook you up with the newer style sender, far more reliable.

I put one in just in case, but dont have a fuel gauge...I use my fuel management gauge.

Put it forward to get center of weight as far forward as you can. I replaced my 150 tank with a 100 in my 254. I put it all the way forward then built a bulkhead behind it. I then took the original large tank cover and cut it to make a new hatch over the back one third. I hinged it and now have an awesome wet storage compartment. I throw my fins and wetsuits and anything else that is wet in there. It's wet because I have drain holes in the bottom to the bilge and sometimes water comes the other way if there's a lot in the bilge. I think I have pictures of it in my post on my redo.
