  • 221 powered by 150 optimax

First off this is my first post so please be patient with me. I have a 1989 221 mako was wondering if a 150 hp Optimax would be enough power for it and if anyone has performance numbers on this combination

In my view, a 150HP on that hull is barely adequate.....My hull is a MAKO 221...i had a 200 yamaha on it for years...I always felt it needed more like 225. I repowered with an ETEC G2 200 HO.. The difference was extraordinary. I would be looking at a minimum of 200 and optimally 225.

No way. Brother had a 200 on his 221 and it really wasn't enough. 225 min, 250 better

            yep - i've got a 150 on the back of my '86 20c and I want to get a 175/200..

150 on that will have trouble under anything but a minimal load.

Putting a low hp motor on a Mako is a sacrilege. [V]

Thats what I thought but had came across a article with a 22 mako with a 150 and numbers didnt sound right unless new boats just way lighter believe was like a 1996 if not mistaken

I have the same Hull with a f225ca and it is just enough in my opinion.

Had a 150 Efi on my 221 when I bought it ran about 34 mph definitely not optimal but got me where I had to go upgrade to a 225 pro xs and the boat runs great between 45 and 47 still catches the same amount of fish but makes the boat so much better these boats are a lot heavier than u think I weighed my boat without the motor and was around 3400 pounds
