  • Teak Removal Mako 231 Winter project

Hello to all and thanks in advance for any advice y'all might have.

I am trying to remove all the teak from the interior of my Mako 231 so I can clean. seal, and refinish it over the winter It's fastened with some sort of adhesive as well as the nuts and bolts. I am assuming the adhesive is whatever was original in '88 when the boat was built. Naturally I am trying to remove the teak without destroying it. Any solid advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and Best Regards

    Bob S.

I took ALL my teak off this winter and restored it on my 261. To cut thru the "glue", I used a thin wire and ran it along the back of the teak - holding both ends of the wire and pulling it along - and "cut" through the silicone. Hope it helps.

I took all my teak off, dried it all for several days on the sunroom floor, sanded it, cleaned it, sanded again, cleaned it, then started with 9 coats of Spar Varnish. I used Jamestown Distributors - LUST. It gave me the extremely high gloss I was looking for and was able to re coat quickly without requiring sanding between coats.

        Good luck with your project!
