  • 253 livewell

I just got a 2006 253 that needs a fair amount of updating and maintenance so I probably will be asking a lot of questions. I have two to start: Can someone with a 253 (circa 2006) check the latch on the underside of the livewell lid and tell me if the latch lever is straight or offset. Mine as well as another friend's 253 boat are missing the latch lever (corroded off).

I have replaced all the under helm battery and feed cables including battery switches. When I got the boat I noticed that there is no cable connecting the two battery negative terminals together. I looked at a similar Mako and that boat didn't have a common cable either. That said, the Mercury rigging manual shows a common jumper. I think there should be one.

Thanks to all. I am looking forward to your experiences and insights.

I have a 253, I will send pics of the live well if you give me your email. I believe it is offset.

It seems that this forum won't let me email you because I have only one post

Nevertheless against my better judgement, my email for all to see is [email protected]

The battery negatives should be jumpered together. You did not mention the manufacturer of the battery switches. If they are Perko did you add an ACR relay to charge both batteries? If they are BEP they have VSR relay integral to their design. Hope this helps.

          Thanks Keyman,

Switches are Perko. Charger is dual bank Guest and it is wired directly to each battery. I think I have conformed that finally both batteries are being charged. After about 4 hours, both batteries measured 11.96 volts. They were at about 11.6 before that. I left the charger on and will see what I get next time. I did jumper the battery negs and that seemed to make the charger voltages look more normal

Have not made it to boat, it is the offset one though. I think it is a perko latch.
