  • 1989 Mako 261 with twins on bracket

I am moving up to a 1989 Mako261 from a 1977 Mako22. Ive given the 261 a short test drive but wanted to know from you experts what issues I should be aware of with the 261 such as any areas that are more susceptible to rot or any issues to be aware of when driving this behemoth??? Any and all feedback will be appreciated no matter how insignificant you may think it is. Thank you in advance for any comments.

Look for the usual transom rot, fuel tank age ect.

Is it a factory 261b or an aftermarket bracket? memory is a bit foggy but I think 89 was only open transom??

without knowing whole story or seeing pics, wonder who made the aftermarket bracket on there now? Flotation or no flotation? What kind of power is on there now? What's the transom angle of the bracket? When you took the short sea trial, any trouble with getting the bow down when getting up on plane? How does the transom look bracket is mounted to, have a few years left in her? Those would be a good start, but sure some of the regulars here could go a lot further. Good luck and keep us posted!

Flotation aftermarket bracket with bilge pump, new 200 gal fuel tank in 2012, twin suzuki 225 4 strokes push it well. No issues getting to plane, Props may be too aggressive to get to WOT but gets to 5200 rpm. no signs of rot anywhere yet that I can see. Will post some pics soon.
