  • Mako 19 speed?

I have a 1970 Mako 19 with a 90hp Merc. I am interested in repowering her with a 135-150 Etec. What speeds have you guys reached with higher hp outboards on this model Mako?

I just repowered with a 150hp Etec. Top speed recorded so far has been 44.1 mph. That's with about 450lbs of people, about 25 gallons of gas, plus fishing gear. I'd hoped for a little more, maybe 46-48mph. I have an 18" pitch viper prop. I think the 17" might be a little better, but I need to try one before I could confirm that. My bottom also has a crappy layer of bottom paint on it that I need to sand off at some point. Overall, I'm very pleased. It can cruise at 35mph at 4200 rpms. If I recall correctly, 30mph is about 3600rpm and 25mph is about 3000 rpm. It is just a much better feel over the 90hp Johnson I used to have.

Here's a video of a WOT run, about 43mph or so. No porpoising problems, but I did leave protected water right at the end of the video.

Thanks 89wheelinyj. Mid 40s is nice. Good the hull rode nicely. How does she sit in the water with that outboard? I'd like to get up to 50mph. Good luck! Anyone else?

I have a 191. Just repowered with a 175 Etec G2. 51 mph so far, completely full of full... Brand new motor still in break in mode...

Wow! You put a 175 on a 19'. That is impressive. No wonder you got over 50mph. Good luck.

There is no difference in weight on the 150 through 200 G2 Etec's. Got a good deal on the 175, so I went that route.

As soon as I figure out why my GPS isn't getting power, I'll let you know, lol. I'm running twin 70's and I am quite interested myself.
