  • 1984 Mako 17' Re-power

Hi Guys - I am looking for some advice on re-powering my 1984 Mako 17'. I have my eye on a 90hp Yamaha 4 stroke but don't know what shaft length to get... 20" or 25". Would really appreciate any wisdom. Thx.

Measure your transom, my guess is you’ll need a 20” shaft.

90 will do it on the 17 but getting up to 115+ really is a better fit. With a 90 expect your top end to be low 30s.

We have a 90 Etec on ours and love it. You can run for days and hardly burn any fuel. Of course our other boat was a 236 with a V8 inboard, so maybe i was used to watching the gauge move every time I turned the key
