  • Hull numbers

I own a 20 Mako which I believe was made between 1971 and 1974, based on the research I've done, hull designs etc. I'm trying to get it registered and titled in Florida. (bought the boat in Harbour Island, Bahamas from a local) Can't find the " hull number" can anyone help with suggestions as to where I should look. Tks

No HIN plate on the transom? Did you get the old registration papers or title? If so the HIN should be on there for sure. If you don't have that paperwork, you should be able to backtrack through the old state (Bahamas) registration number through the registration agency where the boat was last registered and they will have the HIN on file. So hopefully the registration numbers are still on the boat.

I'm not sure about the 1970's, but in the 1980's and on, Mako used to put a second HIN plate in the anchor locker or in the console. Look in those places and in any hatches and inconspicuous places, there might be one in there.

The year model is usually the last 2 digits of the HIN number. For Mako it will begin with MRK, of course depending on the date. Go to this webpage and read about how to translate HIN numbers.

Before you get the boat back out on the water, be darn sure to get a new HIN plate mounted to your transom or even have the number engraved in the transom. Any boat without the HIN clearly visable from outside the vessel is considered contraband and is absolutely subject to seizure by the agency that is checking you. Not to mention, insurance will want it displayed too. But they don't play around with those HIN plates. You can get a replacement plate and have the numbers stamped into the plate and then pop rivit or screw the plate to the transom. I have a few replacement plates laying around, so drop me a line if you indeeed need one.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Happy Hollidays,

    Eddie Ring

Tks for the great info. Hin numbers were not used until after 1972, which is a problem for me. Mako put there hull number on a plate but the state won't except that. I'll look in the anchor locker and the CC. Unfortunately boat was never registered in the Bahamas and I don't have the title. Been working on this for 2 months, but I'm getting closer.

You may have to take it to the Coast Guard and get it registered as a "Homemade" or "Custom" boat. They may want proof of ownership...
