  • Michigan Dave, OMC gear question for you.

My '87 200hp Rude is acting up in reverse. It doesn't want to catch too well and while I'm still getting some reverse thrust it keeps making a loud knocking sound. Can you please help me diagnose? I checked the shifter to make sure it was travelling far enough to engage and seems to be fine there. Someone told me that it sounded like my clutch dog was going bad. I think I read somewhere that if something wasn't hooked up right that I may lose reverse but I can't remember where I saw that. What else could it be and can I replace the gears without dropping the lower unit?

It usually is only one of two things. Either your shift cable is out of adjustment not allowing the shifter to fully engage reverse, or yes your shift dog is worn. the lower unit must be removed and dissasembled for that job. Not a job for the faint of heart/ Dont keep runing it that way or you will make more metal shavings in your lower over time./ dave

Dave, I adjusted the shift cable so it would engage as far back into reverse as possible. It still knocks but not as bad as it was before. Any suggestions you can give me from this point before tackling dropping the lower unit?

Im afraid you are going to need lower unit repair, hopefully you can find a good honest mechanic, and it wont hurt to badly. Talk to Patrick B he is repowering and has a good lower unit on his old 235. and he lives down your way. dave.

As long as forward gear is dependable the worst that can happen I suppose is loosing reverse while docking. Its a hard thing to put money into a nearly 20 year old salty motor. dave.

thanks for the help Dave. That's was I was hoping to hear. It realy realy blows though considering that lower unit was completely rebuilt only 2 years ago. Forward works rock solid for now but I'm not confident in the motor anymore for off shore trips so I'll just us it through this fall - spring for lake striper fishing.

Dave, I had a chance to fool with this a little bit more this past weekend.

I was able to get a couple of more turns on the throttle control this past weekend and it seems the more I'm able to get it back the less it knocks in reverse. The only problem is I absolutely can not go back anymore on the adjustment knob. Do you still think it's the clutch dog or could it be something else? One other thing I should point out is that I had to change out my SS prop to aluminum prop about a while ago. The reason I mention this is that when changing props, I had to leave the washer out or else the aluminum prop wouldn't fit down far enough on the shaft for the retention clip on the end. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but can you please help me re-diagnose with this new info?

                thanks

The prop situation shouldnt have anything to do with the shift problem. You must have a thrust washer on the front of the prop. though. Now I wonder if maybe your throttle controlls are not pulling far enough to get all the way into reverse. Honestly forward is the first gear to fail on a lot of outboards. If you cant get anymore travel with the cable have a look inside your shift controll for wear and tear. dave.
