I picked up my new old and pitted lower unit today and while I was there we figured out what happened. I told him about my ex-mechanic problems and also how the water pump on the motor was new. He gave a look like "are you sure?". I know I paid to have it replaced this fall so he took it apart and after doing so, the driveshaft litterally fell on the floor. We looked at the impeller and he said it looked like it was at least two years old which made sense because I had the entire water pump housing and impeller replace after I bought the boat. Looks pretty evident that my ex-mechanic wasn't doing crap.
The kicker was the driveshaft. It broke off right at the base of the impeller. I expected that it would look like someone had cut through it with a hacksaw, but only about 15 - 20% of the actual surface area looked like it was sheared off. The rest of it was rusted so I'm pretty sure that it was just a matter of time before it sheared off and thank goodness it didn't happen when I was 20 miles offshore. I didn't get a picture, but I'm still amazed that the drive shaft lasted as long as it did....and I am even more curious as to what caused it to start to fail.
