  • Mako 1986 224 Center Console

I am thinking of buying this boat. If anyone is familiar with this particular year & model I would love to hear what you have to say. Any inherent problems that I should look for ?

Bill, I own a 1985 224, and have pretty much been all over it. If there is anything I can do get in touch. As far as problems, that remain: transom, fuel tank, deck. All though (thank God) mine were fine, the previous owner was pretty good about keeping it out of the weather when not in use, and out of the water in a sling. I think this had a lot to do with the transom and tank being okay. As far as on the good side I am happy with my 224. I fished four this weekend with another just along for the ride, a total of five in the boat, 3/4 tank fuel (approx. 75 gal) as well as coolers etc. and was running 33 mph at 4200 rpm.and I have a Yamaha 175 hp. which some say makes it underpowered. I think it does fine. I think you could go along way and not find a finer all around boat. Don P.S. Learned a lesson today; I don't think I want to take a fly fisherman with me again.

I have owed an '82 (a little older) 224 for about 3 months and currently couldn't imagine owning anything else in class. This is one of the smoothest and dryest center consoles I have fished in class. Layout is great - very roomy. My only complaint is low transom, however if you search the forum for key word "spashboard" you will see there are a number of options to alleviate problem. I purchased from a friend and only problem area he fixed was deck over gas tank. I have a '93 Johnson 200 that does a good job and runs great, however I would like a little more horsepower and better fuel economy.

      Good Luck!

        I have a 1986 224 with twin yamaha 115's,trim tabs, T-Top etc..

Would not have anyting else - previous owner kept her inside rack storage so I did not have alot of issues to deal with when I purchased it, other than my engines are getting a little tired I would not trade it for anythig else. Fish most weekends on eastcoast about 10 miles offshore in avearge 3-4 foot seas. Very stable ride.

        Go for it!
