  • Steering cable length

    Hi all,

    Haven't been on in a while, we moved from Baltimore to Beaufort, NC.

    Anyway, how long is the steering cable in a 1981 21' Mako/ I can't find any markings on the jacket of the one that's in there now and it's getting a little loose so I'm doing a little project planning.

    Thanks

    Your best bet is to find a place that has most of the common lengths of cables and then pull yours out and measure it. That's the only way to get the exact length if there are no markings left on the cable. When you get the new one, write down the length in your motor manual or owners book for next time.

      Thanks Mike, I was planning to use the old cable as a chase for the new one. That way it's one pull.

        Just pull one out to measure and leave the second in until you get the new ones. Then pull the 2 new ones AND the old one you measured. You got your new and a pull -

            - Estimate your length (many directions on web such as:

            http://www.glen-l.com/supplies/teleflex-290.html

            - Go to a place with lots new cables in your range;

            - Go ahead and pull it out, but when you do, use it to pull in a couple of spare pulls (I've used 140 lb mono, but you can use anything);

            - Measure old one and immediately buy new one;

            - Use one of above pull mono's to pull in the new one.

            Done.
