I have been asking that question around the town and can't seem to find an answer. Just gotta find the right expert to ask, so I'll try here:

Are NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 compatible? Anybody knwo the NMEA 2000 command string?

Too bad it's made by Lowrance.

Customer service will be non-existant. [xx(]

I love my Lowrance stuff and have been able to get above par customer service with the questions I've had. Found it best not to call though. Going through the web site seems to be best. If they can't solve it there, they have/will inform you to call a service number. My issues were with keeping my Furuno transducer and using it with my Lowrance LCX 104C. They were very helpful.

What problems have you had with the Lowrance equipment Megabyte? Anything you learned you can share about the best way to tackle the customer service issues if I need to (Hopefully never do)? []

The answer is that they are not the same and they are not compatible. However, we can always hope that manufactures will sell us units that will do both. But with all the proprietary networks out there like Seatalk, Navnet, etc., manufactures are not real keen on making it easy for us to mix and match our gear. They'd much rather you buy your whole package from them and unload any old stuff that isn't compatible any longer.

Maretron has a PC USB device that will convert NMEA 2000 to 0183, but I haven't seen one for integrating old 0183 gear with 2000 gear.

But just wait, as soon as you get used to the NMEA 2000 wiring standard the industry will start pushing Zigbee wireless networking. Now, Zigbee is way cool and it blows the doors off Bluetooth for inter-device communications.
