  • Mako to Mako comparison

I am currently trying to decide between two different mako's please give me your opinions on the following

    1st choice : 1988 231 cc in immaculate cond. with a 1999 225 ox66 yamaha

    2nd choice : 1992 221B cc in good shap with a 1998 250 ox66 yamaha

Question which one of these boats will give me the best ride/performance out of these two boats

    thanks in advance!

The 231 is a better hull, methinks, and you can't go wrong with yamaha.

I agree with Justin, 231 better hull and that little bit extra can mean alot to someone facing the choppy waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Also the 231 is stated to be in better shape and older that tells you something about the owners of both - be very critical and cautious when buying a used boat. My 1st boat had a Yahama which I had for 12 years with no problem - all about maintenance - again condition says alot.

        Doug,

        Welcome to the forum! []

The hulls are somewhat similar -- both are nice boats, though the 231 is going to be 6" longer (little on no impact on the ride of the boat).

The major difference in the boats is the transom -- the 221B has an enclosed transom with a bolt-on Armstrong bracket. The 231 is a conventional notched transom boat. That may be a consideration for you -- especially if you like to anchor up and fish. No matter what, get both hulls inspected by a certified marine surveyor of your choosing.

Both have an 8' beam, 19 degrees of deadrise, and fuel tanks of similar size. I'm assuming they both have T-tops, appropriate electronics, but no trailer.

Engines. The 250hp EFI ox66 is a powerful engine, but not all that fuel/oil efficient -- it will move that boat very well, especially with a full tank of gas and 3 crewmembers with gear. The 225hp EFI is also a good engine, slightly less powerful, but more fuel efficient. Make sure you get both engines checked out by a certified Yamaha mech of your choosing.

Electronics. Electronics more than 3 years old have almost no value. Which one has the better package?

        Good luck!

          Thanks, Justin,Chuckb & ProbBlast

The boats are similiar in electronics and T-TOPS.The 231 has new canvas and cushions plus a bow hood.(can't remember the exact name of it)My main concern was the difference in the ride.. If I was to buy the 231 I was planing on closing the transom in anyway..The only thing about the 221B is that it has alot of extra room in the back without those side lockers like the 231!

I inquired on the forum last week about the side lockers on mine, and plan to give them a season. If they don't serve a function and get in the way I will cut out (everyone advised) before next summer.

That hood is called a "dodger"..

BTW - I don't envy your decision. Both vessels sound sweet. []

Well, given that you want to enclose the transom and cut out the fish boxes, I say opt for the 221 after all.

What kind of coin are they asking? I'd go for the 231 as well.
