Hydraulic Steering Play (check valve info)

I seem to have some play in my system. I can turn the wheel lightly and the motor will not move, the wheel just turns. With a little quicker turn of the wheel, the system works fine. There are no leaks that I can find, the system fluid was filled and I attempted a purge of the air.

It's a seastar 1.7 hydraulic system, no power assist. The fluid remaining is not a clear as the new fluid I added. Any thoughts?

Where you able to keep the motor from moving while you turned the wheel while purging? If so your helm could be going bad. Does it only happen in one direction or both?

Leo, thanks for the link....sounds just like the problem. I'll have to dig in and fix her up. I'm searching for pics before I screw it up.

          Back,

My dads boat had the same problem. If you turned the wheel slow. it would not turn the engine at all..needless to say it slowly got worse until it was dangerous..he took it to get fixed and the dealer replaced the helm claiming that no one fixes them anymore...I dont think we could have fixed it anyway, so better off leaving that to the experts...

For those who need pics, I found these last night and shows some pics on the pieces and parts and how to get to the check valve(s). Hope this helps the next adventurer.

Leo, found the original photos from your reply. Again, thanks.

SportFishing and Charters Forum - Teleflex steering - I had some issues with my hydraulic steering not responing to input. The problem had gotten worse with time, until something needed to be done. I will attach the instructions for rebuilding/cleaning the check valve in the helm. I will also attach some pics of what

This is more in depth and shows a closeup of the check valve assembly. I have seen this problem on the net with so many other helms. This should be helpful to the next guy....he can now spend that extra $$ on other bling.

It is fixable, but requires a lot of bench time. I wasn't willing to put up with it. Bought a new helm with a better lock to lock ratio. Much happier, and I know it won't repeat itself. Cost me about $350 I think.
