  • anti fouling paint on a bracket

i have been in the keys for a week now and i have also noticed this at home:aluminum outboard brackets should never be painted with a copper base anti fouling bottom paint.what you have done by doing this is created a battery-2 dissimilar metals the copper ans aluminum the aluminum in the bracket will sacrifice it self galvanic corrosion-not electrolysis{that is hair removal}.it doesn't matter that the bracket is powder coated it is still aluminum. tri-lux is ok to use and any other paint that is for aluminum boats will function well but do not use a copper base paint!!! remember this all you guys with these bracket jobs going on.and also remember there is a great new product that is on the market it is called a moisture displacing lubricant! crc-it is the only product that i am aware of that actually neutralizes salt-using this or corrosion block spray{pricey} under the cowling after a days running will fight off that corrosion the engines wil recieve on the bracket.don't forget to lube the tiller pin lube point 2x as much as normal-not doing this will cause the engine to be stiff to turn due to a salt build up at the tiler arm bushings-believe me even hydraulic steering will feel stiff with this problem.it is a good idea to spray in that area as well.

zinc chromate is the primer we use in my shop for the lower units.remember polluted fresh water will cause galvanic corrosion as well as salt water.
