  • when to check under deck

    I have a 1993 191 Mako center console.

It was moored 3 months a year in salt water

    for most of it life.

I purchased last summer, checked it out the best

I could and I was confident at the time I got a good

boat. The transom seems dry from the screws that I removed

and inspected. No stress cracks etc.

I have been reading many posts about replacing fuel tanks,

replacing stringers etc... Stupid question ? Should I

inspect to see if I have any problems. I guess the best way

would be to remove piece of the floor that the center console

is mounted on. Seems like a lot of work... I will do if advised.

Gas tank seems ok. No smell from below deck.

I appreciate your advise and guidence. This is a wonderful

    Take Care,

Do you smell gas in the bilge? If not then I wouldn't worry about anything.

Make sure that you also check for a gas smell right after you have added gas to the tank (over 1/2 tank). This will also check you gas fill tube (from the gunnel to the tank) and all the tank hose and connections. If you don't smell anything I agree with Sailor - don't worry about it. Some history of Mako gas tanks - In the mid '80 I had a long, long conversation about Mako gas tanks with one of the orginial guys who designed (and built) my 21 '73 CC. He told me that not all tank coffins and tank foaming were created equal. By that he ment that some were done right and the tank was completely surrounded with foam and the coffin was sealed properly and some were not done so well. Point here being that some boats will last of 26 years (like mine did and it wasn't the tank that corroded it was the AL fill tube) and some will go after day 5 to 10 years. Hope thsi helps
