  • auxillary motor on 17

I've got a brand new 8hp 4 stroke yamaha that I use for my spec rig. 11ft.alum.V-hull.Would it be able to move my 1400lb 17 w/115 2 stroke yamaha well enough to use as a trolling/auxillary motor(3to5knots)Or would that just be plain dumb?

That motor would be perfect as a kicker. you could run it for pennies and have the comfort of knowing if the main motor quits your still getting home.. There are stearing kits that make the install a breaze.

1400lb?! Sure enough, that's what's listed on the Mako site. Anyone got any clue how a boat can gain 350lbs in less than 10 years?

Thanks Michigan dave,it's a tiller, how does that steering kit work?

Mubkis ,there is a guy at BoatersWorld here in vb.said he use to work at MakoMarine, his name is Carlos, and he said the way the glass was laid up on some of the 80's 17's required 1/2 inch thick hulls giving it a much heavier feel.It must be true,my 17 feels really solid even in 3to4ft seas.Man I feel safer in my 17 than some of my friends 20-21's.I Guess thats where the extra 350lbs comes from,Mako might have decided ,our hulls are tuff lets save money go thinner.May also be the reason 1 year later ,the 17's gained 11gal.of fuel.

check for a kit at boaters world or west. It consistes of a stainless rod with a ball joint on each end. You can still run it as a tiller as the remote controll parts can be quite pricey. Most every motor set up as a tiller has a friction adjust mechinism. This will let you set the rpms for the best troll speed. You only have to adjust it when you change directions or for a different style bait. I run a very low pitch prop on my kicker motor so it doesnt have to work hard. check your owners manual for the friction adjust.

          Hope this helps dave.
