  • Islamorada BPS Mako Funament Report Sept 17 2015

Wanted to make a report. My third year participating at Islamorada BPS/WWS since funaments were reintroduced by BPS Mako. Extremely well run with great food and drink about 200 attendees for awards night. Islamorada is the best BPS/WWS Mako funament locale IMO. Calm seas on Friday, rougher seas on Sat. 46 registered boats but unknown how many were classic makos. Fishing was somewhat slow as for quantity (especially the lack of usual early fall dolphin run) but a few special fish were caught by the field notably a 150 lb blue marlin (from a 22 ft boat out 26 miles), a 70 lb white marlin, a sail, top dolphin was 38 lb, 22 lb wahoo, lots of blackfin, AJ's and skippies at the hump, etc, etc. Surprisingly George Poveromo did not personally have remarkable catches as he almost usually does.

Notably I had a serious engine problem that caused me not to fish on Friday. Had a small 1/8 " fuel hose split on its barb on the crankcase. I believe it split when I squeezed the fuel primer bulb on Thursday cold start launching when I moved boat from ramp 50 feet to slip. Fuel line was obstructed by the oil injection tank and was part of the accelerator pump boost circuit (1998 2+2 merc 115) so no lean condition or engine damage occurred. Repaired in shade with help of resort manager and $5 in parts but not back in water until 3:30 pm.

All fishing was done by my 7 year old granddaughter (I captain and rig, bait only). Saturday was blowing 10-20 from SW so fished in Florida bay and caught usual small sharks and snappers. Went out oceanside downsea to Cheeca Rocks nearshore in PM. Anchored and chummed outside SPA and caught nonstop juvenile yellowtail, grunt, grovers, and one strawberry grouper. At 4:15 PM with a strict 5 pm deadline to physically turn in the catch cards at the WWS fuel dock, I rigged my largest live bait (8" hornbelly) on a circle hook with 7' 80 lb mono leader on 30 lb hi vis mono on a 6500 baitrunner in attempt to get a barracuda on the last cast. First cast over reef no joy. Made a long side arm cast off edge of reef causing bait to skip a couple times, engaged baitrunner freespool and within 3 seconds a school of about twenty jack crevalles (looked like 10 pounders) rose on bait and one slurped it. I let him take it 5 seconds before engaging drag. Handed rod to granddaughter and my wife put the fighting belt on her. By the time I had anchored pulled and stowed about 150 yards of line was out (no BS). Chased fish down then circled it 3 times before grabbing its tail. Fish weighed 21.5 lbs and was 40 inches long (very thick fish but had no gut on him). Released fish and hauled butt back to WWS fuel dock. Made it funament fuel dock by 4:55 PM.

Her one day catch total was enough for her to win top junior female angler award (girls under 16). This was her 5th BPS Mako Funament top junior female award (she was overall top junior female angler for the 2014 BPS funament series as well). Islamorada is a premier fishing locale (my wife also won top female angler in Islamorada 2013 with several dolphin including a 18 lb bull and a large shark) and if any of you want to do a funament this is probably the best one for fishing diversity (Fla bay backcountry, reef, wreck, offshore, humps). Be advised the mid Sept date for the Islamorada funament is in prime hurricane season so low pressure systems could impact (so far they have had 3 perfect weather funaments).

I can highly recommend all BPS funaments as they are very well run and a great fun/value and kid/family friendly. We are definitely going to Ft. Myers Beach as it is my granddaughter's favorite and Estero Bay has decent snook and redfishing when using live pilchards under cork (chumming live pilchards helps a lot) . If you make it to Ft. Myers Beach look for the Rusty II from Jupiter with Ms. Maddy the 7 year old fishinggirl and say hello.

Great report! I would love to attend one of the funaments, but am trailer-less and towing vehicle-less.

BUT I could run down to Islmorada on the water...maybe next year.

I am hoping for install on the 9th or 10th for new motor. If so I still have the time reserved off. I have partial crew on stand by. If not I may make a road trip north to see Brando's way of fishing
