  • Day One

First day of fishing is done! I wish I could post a great report, but unforunately the fish had lockjaw today, or at least the keepers. [:-(] I put in at 0530, along with Michigan Dave and HungOne and as we were pulling away, Makomyday and Ringleader show up. We all headed out to Destin with the Intrepid leading the way and the rest of us catching up to them later. [:u] After a quick stop for ice, we went out to catch some bait. This is what set the tone for the day. After trying for an hour, we all had only about a dozen baits so we all decided to head out to the first spot about 18 miles out. After almost a 45 minute run with myself, Michigan Dave and Hungone, we hit the spot and someone is already there...oh it's the Intrepid.

The winds were out of the North at least 10 knots, so with the prevailing southerly seas it was rather bumpy trying to fish. Dave, Steven and Eddie all pulled in some snapper, but most were not legal. We pulled in some triggers, but they were quite short of the 12" minimum. After an hour and half or so, we decide we have had enough, drop the outriggers and put out a trolling spread for the next several hours and head out to deeper water. No luck and then the Stretch 30 pops up out of the water, so I real it in and it's got some big teeth marks on each side. I put it back out but after that strike, it won't run straight and kept popping back up.

We start to head towards some other numbers, when we see this boat coming right at us really fast, spray flying. About three miles out, they turn and head to a boat bottom fishing off our Port stern and it turned out to be the Marine Patrol which I have never seen 20 miles offshore. I guess since we were trolling the left us alone.

We get to our spot, drop some baits and nadda. I real mine up and get half way up when it doubles over and fish on. After a five minute fight a nice Bonito comes up and he had another one with him which we tried to hook up for my 10 year old nephew, but no luck. I pull him and in the box for cut bait for tomorrow.

We then headed in to the liberty ship inshore to live bait for some kings about 1 PM. The wind had shifted and we ran 30 mph back in the whole way. After slow trolling for an hour with no luck we head for the pass and decided to weigh in the Bonito - since that is the fish that won the tournament last year and this one went 9.9 pounds. Eddie & Co. were pulled up on the beach across from the scales so of course we went over to tell them we were weighing in a fish. [8D]

It was a great day on the water and there were several other Makos out fishing. I don't have a total count yet, but when we got back to the ramp/hotel, I saw several boats that were not there yesterday so we probably have 10 - 15 boats.

I'll post more reports tomorrow afternoon. I'm fishing in the morning, then back at the house for the afternoon getting everything ready for the cookout tomorrow.

Eddie, Dave and Bobby took some pictures and I'm sure they will post them later.

X-shark didn't get wet today. Bobby didn't have a crew so he jumped on with Dave and then they will fish tomorrow on the X-Shark.

I would have bought a plane ticket to ride in X-shark, but felt uncomfortable imposing on others boats.[B)] It will be nice to see all the other comments on the get-together.[]
