  • Integrating Electronics of Different Brands

I am looking at a new boat with a Garmin GPSmap 1042 installed. It needs a VHF. I'd like a flushmount VHF with internal GPS and AIS. I've had good luck with Standard Horizon and would go for something like the Standard Horizon GX2200B Standard Matrix AIS/GPS VHF, which goes for about $325-$350. For safety's sake I like the idea of being able to send a distress call with my exact GPS coordinates and the AIS info quickly so I'm really not willing to give that up. The cheapest Garmin I saw with AIS is like $800. The dealer says the Garmins integrate together well. Is there really any compelling reason to spend the extra $450-$500 on the Garmin? Thanks in advance

Why, does it integrate better with the Garmin Chartplotter than a Standard Horizon would?
